Infocom Nostalgia

Well, I have my last final tomorrow night. Can’t seem to get down to studying yet. I’m not a math person. But I have so many fun things to do to help me pass the time without opening my books! For example, I have recently rediscovered Infocom text based adventure games. :-D

For those not in the know, these were immensely popular in the days before computers had 3D graphics. Some famous text based games are Adventure, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and others. For a pretty complete list of the games Infocom produced, check out Classic Infocom Games Revived. Manuals for these games can be found at The Infocom Documentation Project. Here is a list of programs you can use to play these games. While you can download the games on the site, if you like them, consider taking the time to find a copy for sale. This has become exceedingly difficult these days, though, so I understand if you’re not keen on making the effort. As an added plus, check out the walkthroughs that are linked to from the same site. I am geeky enough to admit that I actually own about half of those games from my childhood.

For some history about Infocom and the games it released, try reading this paper written about the subject by some students at M.I.T. It’s not a very cheerful paper as it focuses on why Infocom failed. Heh. What were they thinking? Business software?
